How To Prepare For The California Contractor License Exam

By Richard Larkin

In preparing for this important examination it should be understood that the test has two components. The first part of the California Contractor License Exam requires all eligible individuals to pass the Law and Business examination. The second test that must be passed covers the specific certification area or trade for which the individual is applying. There are a number of ways to prepare for the tests that will depend on how much time you have and resources available to you.

The questions presented in the Business and Law section of the test are all multiple choice. In this section of the test construction law and business management are covered. Applicants will receive a notice to appear for testing which includes a study guide for the particular part of the test they are taking. The guide has a breakdown of the topics covered on the examination. All qualifying applicants can use the guide and other suggested materials listed in the guide.

In addition you will receive the study guide for the certification part of the test. Like the guide for the Law and the Business section, the guide provides information and topics that are covered on the examination. Additionally, the guide offers recommendations for study materials. This section of the test also consists of multiple choice.

How a person studies for the test will depend on the amount of free time they have. There are several ways to study. Folks can take classes from the local college, study from home, or take instruction from a prep school. Many people study for the test at home with great success. No matter how a person chooses to prepare the state contractors licensing agency offers study resources free of charge.

If you choose to study at home, make sure to obtain all study materials the state or local licensing agency can provide. These resources include reference material you will be allowed to take into the test with you. In addition, you will be able to take the Contractors Guide to Business Law and Project Management in to the test.

Training and tutoring for the general and specialized test are offered in a classroom setting through license examination preparation schools. Typically, theses schools sell reference books. Additionally, they offer assistance with risk insurance, locating secured bonds, filing, and much more. The highly regarded schools will also guide folks through the process offering support even after the test is passed.

There are some folks who believe the prep schools are not worth the time or money and others who disagree. If you are interested in one of these schools the state licensing agency can offer lists of prep schools. In addition, the agency will provide a list of bookstores where you are able to buy materials for preparation.

Provided the applicant passes the test, they will receive a bond and fee notification form at the test site. The form offers the information regarding the requirements that need to be submitted for obtaining the license. Even if they have passed the examination, all applicants must be approved and accepted to receive the license.
