Useful And Essential Facts About Variable Rate Spreaders

By Angela Lee

A fertilizer spreader is a mechanical or manual device that is used to apply granulated materials on grass lawns, farms, among other places. Some of the granulated materials that are applied using these devices include fertilizers, salt, lime, and seed among others. Fertilizer is applied on crops or grass to increase the fertility of land while lime is applied to regulate the pH value of the soil. Salt is usually applied on snow to make it melt. Here are facts regarding Variable rate spreaders.

A typical spreader has a can or hopper that contains the granulated material that should be applied. The material is applied on the ground from the hopper at a specific rate. Different commodities are normally calibrated such that materials are applied at a different rate. The type of material being applied determines the application rate in most devices.

The commodity being applied has to be free flowing and dry so that the application can be done well. Usually, holes are contained in the hopper through which the material drops to the ground. The material will be unable to flow onto the ground as it should if it is not free-flowing. These could cause the application to be scanted and it might not work effectively to get quality results.

People use these devices for several different reasons. First, people prefer them because they enable uniform application of farm materials that the land requires. When used they enable uniform scattering of the materials being applied on land when one is working. The effect of this uniform application of materials is achievement of uniform results. For instance, if seed is the material in question, then uniform germination is achieved and good lawns are produced.

Lawn fertilizer and lime spreaders are available in a wide range of models and types. Some types and models are very large and can be used on large pieces of land because they are capable of holding a lot of material. Others, however, are very small in size and can only be used to apply material on small backyard lawns. This gives buyers flexibility in their purchases.

Before deciding the size of a commodity to purchase, ensuring one has adequate storage for the equipment when they are not using it is important. Weather elements can damage spreaders when they are not kept indoors because they are delicate devices. One of the factors that makes people go for smaller spreaders is lack of space for storage.

Besides storage, one must also ensure that they only buy a large product if they have use for it. It would be counterintuitive to buy a spreader that is worth several thousands of dollars when it is only meant to be used once in a year. In a case where one does not have frequent use for the product, it would be better to just rent from local rental businesses.

Usually, local rental businesses are willing to lease out spreaders to individuals at different rates. Factors like how regular one hires the device, the size and model of product rented, and the duration of rental determine the rates. Discounts might be offered to regular clients.
