Information Regarding The Process Of Sod Installation

By Ruth Cooper

Grass can also be referred to as sod. Sod is not grown on soil and this is the difference between sods and grass. Sod farmers have specialization in the cultivation of this product. Specialized farm equipment is usually used during harvesting. It is harvested whenever it is ready and cut into uniform square or rectangular sizes. They are then taken to the markets for sale after being rolled. Sod installation comes after the product has been purchased.

Golf courses, lawns and sports stadiums are places where harvested sod is used. Home builders and landscapers usually use sods too, especially on residential projects. Soil erosion can be avoided by installing these products in a place. It is also useful in places damaged during sporting activities, which include sports field.

Installation of sods is the process of laying turf in a required area. The process of installing sods requires a lot of concentration, focus and time. But first one has to consider certain factors before buying or installing turf in a particular area. A person needs to determine how much turf they need to buy. They can achieve this by measuring the area where the turf is to be placed.

It is also very paramount to determine the type of grass. This can be done by testing the soil around the area. Doing that ensures that the soil matches with sods. One is also advised to take note of other issues that may hinder performance when turf is installed. The time to carry on this process is also a factor. This determines the time when to buy.

The installation of turf involves various steps. First one needs to prepare the soil. This has to done before buying the turf since it has a short life shelf and one has to install it immediately. Site preparation involves removal of weeds and debris. One has to also kill the existing lawn. This is to ensure it does not compete with the installed sod.

The best place for setting up the turf is along the longest straight lines. Straight lines can be found along sidewalks and driveways. Stretching of the product so as to prevent gaps should be avoided. Edges should be pushed against each other. There should be staggered turf joined in each row. A large knife or a machete may be used during trimming. Regular use of blunt objects destroys the grass.

It is necessary for the grass to be watered after being set up. Water helps the soil to be well bonded with turf. This should be done on weekly basis . The purpose of doing this is to moisturize the soil and maintenance of underfoot. Making the soil to be exceedingly wet is not necessary.

After the setup, recurrent maintenance is vital. Application of fertilizer and trimming of the grass is expected. It is recommendable for an individual to control pests from the beginning. Newly installed turf can be injured if weeds are not controlled. The purpose for doing all these is to maintain healthy turf.
