Virginia Beach Lawn Care Insights For Homeowners

By Linda Parker

Every home loves an evergreen and healthy sod in their backyard. However, this does not happen by chance. A lot of effort goes into making sure that the grass in not patched or overgrown. For those who live in Virginia Beach lawn care can really payoff in giving you a beautiful home. The tips discussed below can help you achieve this.

Invest in the right gardening tools for taking care of your yard. Some of the things you will need include a good mower, gardening rake, and a hoe. The mower will come in handy when cutting the sod to your desired size for added aesthetics. A gardening rake comes in handy when removing leaves and cleaning the lawn while the hoe is useful for weeding or preparing the ground for planting.

In order for your mower to make uniform and neat grass cuts, make sure you keep its blades sharp. This is important in managing healthy grass. Wounded edges that are common when you cut grass with blunt blades result in infections that may spread throughout the yard. Besides, your yard will not look beautiful like when the edges are uniform.

Beware of the prevalent whether when deciding how long or short to trim the grass. For instance, it is helpful to keep the grass tall during summer. This is because it grows properly and deepens its roots making your yard look wonderful. Such plants are hard to damage even when extreme weather or serious infestation occurs. On the other hand, short grass is suitable for winter. It actually allows light and the free flow of air on to the surface thus keeping off snow mold.

Avoid scalping you sod. This exposes the ground to direct sunlight which activates the growth of weeds. These plants often grow fast and can easily colonize your backyard while your grass dies out. Keeping your grass too short also prevents it from developing deep roots that can sustain it during harsh weather.

Those areas with shady grass, you may keep it tall. But, make sure there is enough sunlight so that it grows properly. When there is low sunlight, the rate of photosynthesis goes down and you will find that plants do not grow fast.

Practice grasscycling which is simply leaving the grass clippings on the sod after mowing. These clippings decompose and add more nutrients to the soil. This gives the soil healthy and safe organic manure which helps in keeping your fertilizer costs low. It also makes mowing easier as you have no trash to take care of. However, for grasscycling to work well, you will need to cut you grass frequently so that the clippings are short.

Do not deny your lawn enough water especially during the dry season. If you notice some empty patches especially during spring, be quick to fill it with new grass to avoid the growth of weeds. Sometimes your grass can die because of infertile soil. In such cases, apply fertilizer uniformly to achieve the same growth rate of your sod.
